About the Department

In the contemporary times, communication has the power to touch and transform lives of people by empowering them with information and knowledge. It enables them to exercise their own their rights to lead a better quality of life. It was with this conviction that the Department of Development Communication and Extension was established in the year 2004. The students undertaking the undergraduate program pass out with a B.Sc. degree in Home Science, (Honours and Pass) with a specialization in Development Communication and Extension. The Department also started B.A (Honours) Journalism in 2017.

During the three year program, the students are exposed to a variety of subjects ranging from Fundamentals of Human Communication, to Extension Management, Mass communication, Media Studies, Gender, Media and Society, Advertising and Public Relations and Development Communication and Journalism. The students specializing in the field receive training both in the theoretical as well as the practical aspects of Communication. There is emphasis on modern Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) as well as the traditional/ local and folk media as tools of communication. The student's plan, script and produce a variety of communication material for edutainment and infotainment such as radio programs, short films, documentaries, participatory videos, digital stories, photo features, power point presentations, newsletters and audio-visual shows. These communication aids are based on a variety of issues such as Developmental, social, educational and environmental to name a few. Along with this, print as well as traditional media such as educational floor and board games, grassroots comics, posters, info-graphics, advertisements, flip charts, flash cards, bulletin board, street play and puppetry are also ideated, designed and developed. The Department has a state-of- the-art audio studio for training students in radio production..

Besides media production, field visits, interaction with community members at the grass-root level, interface with the industry, seminars, workshops and lectures by experts, inter-college and intra-college competitions are a part and parcel of the course. Every year the Department organizes annual academic event 'COMSCAPE' focusing on various issues ranging from contemporary social, economic and technological concerns of society. Besides this, the department trains the students in fulfilling their social responsibilities by reaching out to the community through a community out-reach literacy and skill training program, 'Each One Skill One'.

During the past years, several renowned people in the field of Development Communication have visited and interacted with the students. Dr. Arvind Singhal, Professor, Development Communication, Texas University, El Paso, USA; Shazia Ilmi, former Journalist and Politician; Dr. Devendra Sharma, Associate Professor, California State University, Fresno, USA; Mr. Andy Bhanot, Director, Research (South Asia), BBC World Service Trust; Mr. Suneet Tandon, In charge, Lok Sabha Channel and former Director, Indian Institute of Mass Communication were some of the prominent guest speakers in the Department.

The students had the opportunity to interact with a number of eminent faculty of other institutions such as Dr. Raghav Chari, Head, Department of Broadcast journalism, IIMC, Mr. Vinesh Chhabra, senior faculty member and eminent communicator at IIPM, Kamla Bhasin, prominent gender activist; and Ms. Anurupa Roy, eminent puppeteer and Director of Kath Katha trust and many practitioners from reputed NGOs have interacted with the students. The Department has an active interface with media industry as well. Prominent radio jockeys Rahul Makin, Sukriti, and news presenters on television channels have visited the college and interacted with the students. The Department also organizes short–term courses from time to time for the benefit of students. These have been certificate courses in 'Radio Jockeying', 'Campus to Corporate', 'Photography', 'The Art of Storytelling', 'Traditional media' and 'Use of Software for Print Media'. The students who have passed out with this specialization have a very impressive portfolio as they have undertaken Masters programs in Mass Communication, Development Communication, Extension, Media and Governance, Animation and Visual media from reputed universities and are employed in diverse organizations.

The Department also provides internship and placement opportunities to the students in diverse fields such as NGOs, media houses, Radio channels and various Development organizations. Some of them are Shewos- an old age home, MASH Project foundation NGO, Team Builders India, Leaders for Tomorrow, Society for Promotion of Youth and Masses, Center for Urban and Regional Excellence, Mission Vriksha, Radio Channels- Fever 104, All India Radio and Radio Mirchi along with research opportunities in various government and non government organizations.

The Department has highly experienced faculty in the areas of Development Communication, Extension, Mass Communication and Journalism. The faculty has been engaged in several research projects funded by different organizations such as University Grants Commission (UGC), Department of Science & Technology (DST), Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA), Ministry of Environment Forests & Climate Change (MOEFCC), Govt. of India from time to time. The faculty members have published several research papers in various national and international journals and have authored several books on communication and allied fields. Students are also registered for Ph.D. program under the guidance of expert faculty of the Department.

JOB PROSPECTS

After passing out from the Department, the students can either take up jobs directly after graduation or else undertake Master's Program in a variety of fields of communication such as Development Communication and Extension, Development studies, Mass Communication, Gender studies, Media Management, Social work or Business Management. They can also undertake Diploma courses in Development Communication, Advertising and Public Relations, Media production, Corporate Communication, Broadcast or Print Journalism. Those interested in teaching at school level can also join B.Ed. program. In terms of career opportunities, the students can work in different fields such as mass communication, public relations, advertising, communication for social and development sector, along with this teaching or research opportunities. Those students desirous of taking up jobs immediately after under-graduation also have several opportunities in these sectors.
