B.A. (Hons.) Journalism

The media industry has evolved over the years creating a huge demand for trained media professionals. Keeping this perspective, the Department of Development Communication and Extension is offering a three year B.A. Honours course in Journalism from the current academic year 2017-18. The course is open to students after completing class XII. The department has a very well qualified faculty from varied fields of Development communication, Journalism and Mass Communication. They have several years of experience of working with traditional, print and electronic media. The course involves both theoretical and project based rigour by way of interactive lectures, discussions, workshops, field visits, talks by eminent personalities, academic festival as well as hands on experience of working with different media. The students will be encouraged to develop critical awareness of not only the values and purpose of journalism but also the political, social and economic contexts in which journalism operates. They will be sensitized to the role and power of media as an agent of change and as a pillar of democracy.

The department has a state-of-the-art audio studio for production of radio programs besides having equipment for photography and video production. The computer lab with a seating capacity of 80 students is equipped with software for designing print media. The students will be encouraged to develop their own portfolio to enable them to seek opportunities of professional and academic excellence.

Eligibility Criteria:

Qualification Minimum Eligibility to Apply Additional Details
12th 45% Aggregate of one language and three best elective subjects would be considered as best four subjects (BFS). Environmental Education (ISC), Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Painting, Dance, Music, Physical Education, Home Science, Engineering Drawing and all other vocational subjects are not considered as BFS.

 

Course contents

BA Journalism is an ideal course for students who desire to pursue a career in traditional and new media. The program syllabus incorporates all aspects of news reporting, photography, print and electronic journalism, media management, gender and human rights as well as advertising and public relation to open numerous possibilities for an illustrious career in the expanding media industry.

Opportunities:

On completion of the course, the students can either get placements in the media and allied industries either through the college placement cell or through the centralized placement cell of the University of Delhi. Those desirous of pursuing higher education could opt for Master's or Diploma programmes in Mass Communication, Development Communication, Journalism, Media and Governance or Advertising and Public Relations as they are the related areas.
