Microbiology is an applied science which deals with scientific study of microbes. It is a challenging and exciting scientific discipline. Microbiology also forms the core of Biotechnology and Molecular Biology. Recognizing the significance of Microbiology in the industry, agriculture as well as in research, the Institute started an undergraduate course in Microbiology in 1992-93. The course is being offered in only select colleges of University of Delhi and has an intake of 31 students. From the academic year 2010-11, the department is offering a three years curriculum under semester system with six semesters. Each semester offers four theory as well as practical papers which have been designed to equip the students in various aspects of Microbiology, Biochemistry, Computers, English and Math. The course is truly multi-disciplinary in nature.
The Department has an active Microbiology Society “MICROCOSMOS” which was started in 1997 under the leadership of Dr. Sunita Aggarwal and under the guidance of our Director, Dr.(Mrs.) K. Khanna.
The society is actively engaged in promoting science by regularly holding seminars by eminent scientists, visits to various industries and research Institutes, exhibition etc. Every year a copy of souvenier prepared by the faculty and the students of the Department is also released. In the year 2006-07, the society organized a UGC sponsored two day symposium on “Biotechnology: The emerging scenario in Indian Society”.
On completion of graduation, the students could pursue Master’s programme in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering or Bioinformatics. They can seek jobs as academicians, researchers, Biotechnologists, Plant Pathologists, Epidemiologists, Clinical Microbiologists, Quality control technologists in the field of medicine, agriculture, food establishments and industries.
