INSTITUTE OF HOME ECONOMICS LIBRARY

The Institute of Home Economics Library System consists of a Central Library and 11 departmental libraries which collectively support the teaching, research and extension programmes of the Institute. The college maintains a well-stocked library which is open to all students, faculty members and staff. There is a well-equipped Reading Room, which subscribes to Newspapers, weeklies, magazines etc. The library is an integral part of the academic setup of the college, the major aim of which is to acquire, collect and organize books and other allied reading materials for use by students and faculty members and thus to support the teaching Programme of the college. Presently the library has a collection of more than 25,000 resource materials which includes text books, reference books and thesis and back volumes of journals in the field of Home Science. It caters the needs of more than 1500 students at undergraduate, postgraduate and research level. The Library circulation services are fully automated. The Library has reading halls at the first floor and on the second floor of the duplex library. The reading halls accommodate eighty students The Library uses ‘KOHA’ software. The Library is well equipped with all the modern facilities and resources (print and electronic). The library follows the Dewey Decimal System of classification, and Books are processed by using AACR-II code. The Call Number in the WEBOPAC helps in locating the books on the shelves. Books are arranged on the shelves in numerical order from 000-999.The library remains open on all working days. A student becomes the member of the library automatically after taking the admission in the College.

MEMBERSHIP PRIVILEGES

All bona fide students of Institute of Home Economics, teaching, non-teaching staff members have right to access the College Library. The under mentioned categories of persons shall be entitled to borrow the specific number of books from the library for the period mentioned against each. For effective use of the library stock, Reference books are issued to the students every Friday at 3:00 P.M. to be returned on following Monday before 10:30 A.M. These are however not put in circulation during examination and vacations. The other books can be borrowed for a period of 7 days as follows:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR LIBRARY READERS

  • Loss of ID card should be reported immediately in the Library or administration.
  • The ID card holder is liable for any damage, theft or loss of any book issued to him/her.
  • The members are expected to return borrowed books on or before the due date stamped on the Date Label in the book. An overdue amount will be charged per volume.
  • As the library is a place of individual study, it is necessary to maintain an atmosphere of quiet and dignity inside the library. Members are therefore, reminded that conversation, consultation and personal greetings inside the library is not permissible. Cell phones and smoking is also not allowed in the library.

ADMISSION TO THE LIBRARY

  • The admission to the library will be on the basis of an Identity Card to be shown at the entrance.
  • Private books, bags, personal effects and printed matter other than library books must not be brought inside the library. These should be kept at the Property Counter. Money, cell phones and valuables not to be deposited with the Property Counter.
  • Library does not accept any responsibility for loss or damage to the personal property left on its premises.

CIRCULATION GUIDELINES

  • The ID card is not transferable as it is token of privilege which only the member, to whom it is issued, is entitled to.
  • Sub-lending of library books is a misuse of this privilege and may lead to the withdrawal of membership.
  • Out of print rare books, reference books, and periodicals are marked for consultation within the library and shall not be issued out for circulation.
  • Borrowers must satisfy themselves about the physical condition of the books before borrowing, otherwise they will be held responsible for any damage or mutilation noticed later or at the time of returning. Penalties for book lost, damaged, mutilated or defaced by marking shall be fixed by the Librarian. Defaulters may be suspended from use of the library pending the discharge of their liabilities.
  • Books issued to the members can be recalled by the librarian at any time, if needed.
  • Books temporarily in special demand may be lent for shorter period as may be necessary for or may be temporarily declared reference books.

ISSUE SYSTEM

On each occasion the book is borrowed, reader’s ID card is to be given at the library circulation counter for getting the books issued.

OVERDUE CHARGES

The members are expected to return borrowed books on or before the due date stamped on the Date Label of the book. An overdue amount will be charged per volume per day as follows,
  1. Re. 1.00 per day per book for a General Book.
  2. Rs. 2.00 per day per book for a Book on Demand.
  3. Rs. 5.00 per day per book for a Reference Book.
Membership of the students who returns a General Book late by 7 days and Reference Book late by a day will be treated as cancelled. Members are requested to drop correct amount of fine into the Fine Box. No receipt is issued for any overdue charges paid by the member.

CARE OF BOOKS

The library books are for the benefit of not only the present but also the future members of the library. Books should, therefore, be handled with every care and consideration.

LOSS OF BOOKS AND/OR ID Card

  • The member is responsible for the books borrowed on his/her Library ID. Neither books nor ID card be lent to another person.
  • Loss of library books/ ID card must be reported in writing to the librarian immediately.
  • Borrowers will be asked to pay for or replace the book lost or returned in damaged condition.

DEPARTMENTAL LIBRARIES

The books are transferred to the Departments on request. The HOD of the department will be required to select the books and get approval from the Director for the transfer. Only the books in duplicate or multiple copies will be transferred and under no circumstances ‘OUT OF PRINT’ books will be transferred to a departmental library.

CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE

All the books issued on the name of the student to be returned along with dues, if any, before taking final examination or terminating connection with the college. Students are required to produce, if member, the Discharge/Clearance Certificate from ‘South Zone Library of Delhi University Library System’ at the time of getting clearance from IHE Library.

OPEN ACCESS AND SHELF ARRANGEMENT

The members have the privilege of direct access to the shelves in the stacks and freedom to browse among the books during specified hours. While books can be freely taken out of the shelves, on no account should these be replaced by the members because of the danger of misplacement.

CDs available in the Library

Institute of Home Economics Library also has a collection of approx. 250 CDs of books available in the first floor of the library. Users can approach the In-charge of the Library for the same.

WebOPAC (Web Online Public Access Catalogue)

The library has fully computerized its most actively used collection, which is searchable through OPAC, the online catalogue, OPAC is extremely user-friendly and enables searches to be conducted with ease and speed. The OPAC allows search by author, title, subject, call number, keywords, and Boolean search. The Call Number indicates the location of the book on the self. It also gives the availability status of documents, whether a particular document is available or on loan. On site orientation and guidance is available at the Online Catalogue terminals. The link of the Webopac is given on the home page of the Institute.
